Key West Guide

Key West may just be my new favorite vacation spot and it was a blessing to kick off 2020 here. While it’s a little chilly in February and not ideal for swimming, there is still plenty to do! I was there for the Mile 0 Music Fest, which if you’re a Texas Country music fan, I highly recommend checking out. It’s the perfect vacation and concert combo if you’re a music lover.

FOOD

You can’t go to Key West without having seafood. There is every type of restaurant in Key West from upscale to street hot dogs (which were really good). My favorite sit-down restaurant was Blue Heaven, they are highly rated on Yelp and it’s one of those “must try” places for tourists because of their famous key lime pie. I had key lime pie EVERY DAY (more than five kinds!). The key lime pie at Blue Heaven was my favorite and not just because it’s photogenic.

For breakfast, our whole group loved Cuban Coffee Queen, we actually ended up going there every morning. There are a few locations in Key West, but the menu is the same. I love the iced coffee made with coffee ice cubes and the breakfast Cuban sandwich, I wish there was one in Austin!

The Conch Republic is on the water and they have a great drink and seafood menu. We brought in the fish we caught and they served it three ways. Many restaurants in Key West will do this for you, just check before you go. Here’s the list of every restaurant I visited during the trip:

  • Seven Fish

  • Blue Heaven

  • Kermit’s Key Lime

  • Cuban Coffee Queen

  • Conch Republic

  • Key West Taco Dog

  • Charlie Mac’s

  • Mr. Z’s Pizza (late-night spot)

THINGS TO DO

The one activity I was most looking forward to was offshore fishing, but I ended up getting extremely sick the entire trip. Lesson learned, take Dramamine a couple of days ahead of your fishing trip. Even though offshore fishing sadly wasn’t my thing, I’d love to fish the flats or just closer to shore. I also had a blast just renting a golf cart and booze cruising around town checking out the beautiful homes. There is some expensive and photo-worthy real estate in Key West!

  • Fishing

  • Rent a golf cart

  • Hemingway House tour

  • Bar hopping on Duval Street

Key West may be one of the more difficult beach destinations to get to, but so worth it in my opinion. There is just enough stuff to do so that you don’t get bored, but you also won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything by having a relaxing pool day. During the day I’d run around town, eat and relax at our house before heading to the amphitheater for the Mile 0 performances at night. I’m looking forward to going back and eating my way through the town again!
